At the center of the enchanting rolling hills, resided a boy named Shepherd. His being was mostly untarnished, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was essentially to tend to his herd of ewes.
Their low murmuring and the rustling of the wind among the single tree on the mountaintop were his constant co-dwellers. Day after day, watching over his here charges inculcated in him a sense of calm satisfaction.
However, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long for companionship. During one such occasion because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome plot.
Stories of wolves preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.
One morning he raced into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The scared villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but found no beast.
The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This trick laughed for a few more days. Yet, one morning, a real wolf did come to prey the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy dashed for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but could protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of crying wolf.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is difficult to earn back. It's a story as relevant today as it was in the past.
